Creative Works on European Integration in Sofia: Reflections, Dialogue, and Shared Journeys

On 20 February 2026, the Creative Works on European Integration exhibition brought together participants at Toplocentrala CCA in Sofia for an evening of reflection, creativity, and civic dialogue within the framework of the EU Journeys project.

The event created a welcoming atmosphere for exchange around a central question: how has European integration shaped people’s lives, memories, and hopes for the future? Through artworks, discussion, and audience interaction, the exhibition offered visitors an opportunity to engage with Europe not as an abstract concept, but as a lived and evolving experience.

Exhibited works and themes

The exhibition presented a diverse collection of works that encouraged visitors to consider Europe from multiple angles: historical, political, emotional, and forward-looking. Among the works featured were pieces connected to Jean Monnet, as well as works such as The Fifth Freedom, The 28th Regime, Story, Opening, and Not So Delicate Tensions. Together, they invited reflection on peace, sovereignty, cooperation, mobility, knowledge, and the fragility and promise of the European project.

Selected works from the exhibition included:

Jean Monnet work 1

The Fifth Freedom

The 28th Regime

Not So Delicate Tensions

Programme and presentation

The programme introduced the broader mission of EU Journeys: Uniting Stories of European Integration and situated the exhibition within the project’s commitment to remembrance, participation, and intergenerational dialogue. The presentations highlighted how personal stories, historical milestones, and contemporary creative tools can come together to deepen understanding of Europe’s development and its impact on daily life.

Participants were invited to reflect on themes such as personal stories, historical roots, utopian and dystopian visions, and the role of contemporary creative expression in making complex European questions more accessible and engaging.

Discussion and audience exchange

The discussion that followed showed strong interest in the human dimension of European integration. Visitors connected the exhibited works with questions of identity, rights, cooperation, and democratic responsibility. The conversation moved naturally between memory and future imagination, demonstrating how cultural events can open meaningful civic dialogue.

Many contributions returned to the importance of listening to individual testimonies and preserving lived experiences as part of a broader European memory. This made the exhibition not only a presentation of creative works, but also a shared space for interpretation and exchange.

Mentimeter insights

The Mentimeter interaction added an important participatory layer to the event by capturing audience reflections in real time. The results visually reinforced the evening’s central themes: European integration is understood not only through institutions, but through opportunity, mobility, solidarity, remembrance, and personal experience.

Continuing the journey

We thank everyone who joined the exhibition in Sofia and contributed to its atmosphere of openness, reflection, and dialogue. The event affirmed the value of using culture and storytelling to bring European topics closer to citizens and to create space for diverse voices.

The conversation does not end here. We invite more people to continue sharing their own stories of European integration through the EU Journeys initiative. You can submit your story here: Share your European integration story.

Bring Your Story to the Creative Works Exhibition

As the Creative Works on European Integration exhibition approaches, we invite you not only to attend, but also to become part of the conversation. On 20 February 2026 at Toplocentrala CCA in Sofia, the EU Journeys project will open a participatory space where stories, memories, and reflections on Europe can be shared alongside the creative works on display.

What does Europe mean in your life?

European integration is often discussed through institutions, treaties, and policies, but it is equally a story of people. It is reflected in opportunities to study, travel, work, collaborate, remember, and imagine a shared future. This exhibition invites visitors to think about those lived experiences and to connect them with the broader European journey.

We encourage participants to bring their own perspectives to the event:

  • a memory connected to Europe or cross-border exchange;
  • a personal testimony about mobility, opportunity, or belonging;
  • a reflection on peace, democracy, solidarity, or citizenship;
  • a story about how European integration has touched everyday life.

An exhibition that invites participation

The Creative Works exhibition has been conceived as a civic and creative environment for dialogue. The works on display explore historical roots, key European ideas, contemporary tensions, and future-oriented visions of Europe. Your voice belongs in that conversation. By sharing experiences and reflections during the event, visitors help turn the exhibition into a living space of exchange between generations and viewpoints.

Join us and share your journey

We warmly welcome citizens, young people, educators, researchers, civil society actors, and all interested members of the public to join the exhibition and contribute to the dialogue. Come ready to explore, reflect, discuss, and share.

Together, we can continue building a richer picture of Europe through individual testimony, creative expression, and respectful dialogue.

What the exhibition is about

Part of the broader project EU Journeys: Uniting Stories of European Integration, the exhibition brings together creative interpretations of Europe’s past, present, and future. It highlights stories of integration, remembrance, citizenship, solidarity, and democratic participation, while encouraging audiences to reflect on the milestones, rights, and opportunities that have transformed life across the continent.

The curated selection includes works inspired by:

A Night of Reflection and Connection: Wrapping Up EU Journeys Documentaries

On 07 October 2025, the EU Journeys: Uniting Stories of European Integration event successfully brought together participants at Toplocentrala CCA in Sofia. Our goal was to create space for both reflection and dialogue regarding what it means to be European today.

Highlights and Impressions

The evening delivered on its promise to explore European integration through the powerful lens of personal narratives. Attendees experienced film screenings that captured transformative experiences across five nations – Bulgaria, Italy, Germany, Greece, and Estonia—demonstrating how European policies, such as Erasmus+ and the Schengen Agreement, have shaped lives.

The event successfully moved beyond simple screenings by including the Structured Discussion, „The European Integration Through Personal Stories,“ followed by the open, informal discussions held during the screening of Lineup 2. This format provided fresh perspectives on policy impact and cultural exchange.

Key Outcomes

The successful hosting of this event in Sofia fulfills our commitment to disseminating the documentary project results and highlighting the human dimension of European integration.

The event provided valuable feedback on key EU policies and the citizen attitudes towards key EU initiatives and perspectives.

We thank all who joined us for this celebration of European stories and shared experiences. Stay tuned for the next batch of events and engagement opportunities within the EU JOURNEYS project!

The Human Heart of Integration: Preparing the EU Journeys Documentaries

Behind every policy and historic treaty lies a powerful personal story waiting to be told. At EU Journeys, we believe that understanding European integration means understanding the individual lives that have been transformed by it.

We are currently putting the final touches on a special collection of documentaries that explore resilience, opportunity, and transformation across Europe.

Imagine the thrill of finding freedom of movement that makes you feel „like a bird“. Picture the quiet power of belonging and connection dissolving borders through culture and education. Envision new horizons achieved through studies and cultural exchanges after borders opened.

These deeply personal narratives, stretching from the mountains of Bulgaria to the borders of Estonia, and from the creative spaces of Bremen to the historic landscapes of Greece and Italy, reveal how European unity manifests in daily life.

Stay tuned for the official announcement – you won’t want to miss the chance to experience European integration through the lens of these compelling personal narratives. The journey begins soon!

BG

EU Journeys at the 2025 Remembrance Cluster Meeting – Stories That Unite

On June 12, 2025, I had the honour of representing the EU Journeys project at the Remembrance Cluster Meeting hosted by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) in Brussels. The event brought together over 83 projects selected under the 2023 and 2024 calls of the CERV – European Remembrance topic, all united by a common goal: to safeguard memory as a foundation for democratic, inclusive European societies.

Setting the Stage

The morning began with powerful opening remarks from Alessandra Luchetti, Maria Tomassetti, and Katharina von Schnurbein, who emphasized the increased urgency of remembrance in light of contemporary threats such as antisemitism and historical distortion. As von Schnurbein poignantly stated,

“Preserving memory and constructing a common historical narrative is more important than ever.”

Panel Highlights

Panel 1: Landscape of Remembrance in Europe
Representatives from key REM projects — Schindler’s Ark, REC, Mothers of Europe, and VIELAC — reflected on the shrinking space for memory in Europe. Schindler’s Ark shared a moving account of the last grandson of the original owner who repurchased the historic factory. Panelists emphasized the importance of anchoring memory in real places and testimonies, warning against the collapse of shared narratives under the weight of disinformation.

We tend to forget the past. Telling the stories of ordinary people is crucial so we don’t repeat our mistakes.” – Tijl Akkermans

Panel 2: Feedback on REM project implementation
The second panel focused on outreach, impact, and building collaborations. It reinforced our belief in the EU Journeys approach — combining innovative tools with emotionally resonant stories to create inclusive, pan-European dialogues.

Afternoon Exchange: Dialogue and Synergy

The afternoon break-out rooms enabled direct exchanges between projects working under the same thematic priorities. This provided an excellent opportunity to showcase EU Journeys’ key pillars:

  • Testimonial-based storytelling from across generations
  • AI-assisted visual and literary interpretation
  • Community-based exhibitions and open reading sessions

We engaged in meaningful dialogue about how to reach underrepresented audiences, counter Euroscepticism, and preserve memory not just as history — but as a living civic value.

Key Takeaways for EU Journeys

  • Narrative Power Matters: Citizens connect with people, not just policies. Human stories are the bridge between memory and identity.
  • Safeguarding Remembrance: Memory is under attack — from Holocaust denial to current-day antisemitic vandalism conflating Gaza and Shoah Memorial.
  • Creative Methodologies are Vital: The use of multimedia, co-creation, and community involvement was widely encouraged.

History is being used to polarize society. Projects like ours must reclaim it for unity and reflection.” – Panel comment from Mothers of Europe

Looking Ahead

We invite our fellow projects to collaborate, share materials, and join us in events across partner countries. A shared history needs shared stewardship.

The EU JOURNEYS project officially launched with a dynamic three-day kick-off meeting held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from March 27 to 29, 2025. Hosted by Expert Pool – Bulgaria, the coordinating organization, the event brought together partners from Estonia, Greece, Italy, and Germany to plan the project’s next steps and foster collaboration within the consortium.

Project Overview

EU Journeys seeks to enhance understanding of European integration and identity through the collection, production, and dissemination of real stories and experiences. The initiative emphasizes inter-generational dialogue and the commemoration of key milestones that shaped the European Union, highlighting how these processes have transformed lives across borders.

Key activities include:

  • Production of five short documentary films featuring personal testimonies.
  • Development of interactive and AI-enhanced art exhibitions.
  • Compilation and publication of a book of testimonials, with open readings and launch events.
  • Screening and dissemination activities targeting diverse audiences from students and educators to civil society representatives.

A Productive Kick-Off Meeting

The agenda on March 28 included detailed presentations of each Work Package, roles and responsibilities, and technical planning. Key sessions focused on project milestones, creative storytelling, gender balance, and inclusion of various perspectives in the audiovisual content. A dedicated session on communication and dissemination laid the groundwork for the project’s visibility strategy, while partners also enjoyed time to connect informally and explore Sofia.

Saturday’s closing session reflected on the collective energy and commitment of the team, and set priorities for the next phase, including the first screening event and early editorial work for the testimonial book.
